Abstract:

The Airports and Heliports database, developed by the U.S. Geological Survey and Montana Base Map Service Center, is a geographic point layer of aircraft landing facilities in Montana. This layer includes airports, heliports, stolports, ultalight and sea plane bases. Attribute data is provided on basic physical characteristics, location, and contact information for these landing facilities. Attributes were derived from a variety of sources. There are 273 landing facilities in the Airports dataset.

These are the original version of the data that were served by the State Library from 2004-2015. This version was removed in 2015 in favor of a version without time-sensitive fields such as the name and address of the facility manager.

Data set credit:

Creation of this data was made possible through funding from the Montana Homeland Security Taskforce GIS Subcommittee. The database was created by the United States Geological Survey, Montana National Spatial Data Infrastructure Partnership Office in Bozeman Montana. Certain existing data from the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), Federal Aviation Admintistration (FAA), and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Hazard assessment (HAZUS) databases were used to intially populate the database.

Attributes were primarily compiled from FEMA's HAZUS data, BTS's NTAD data, online Census data, and FAA's APT text files and can be assumed accurate within the bounds of those sources. Attributes such as contact names and phone numbers will change and will require maintenance.

FEMA HAZUS data, online Census data, and GNIS also used as sources for attributes.

Source contribution:: APT data was the definitive source for most descriptive attributes in the Airports layer. APT data was source for name, city, ownership, use, runway information, site number, owner and manager contact information descriptive attributes. Data were obtained from the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) National Airspace System Resource Aeronautical Data. This product was published by the Aeronautical Information Services (ATA-100) with an Effective Date of 05 August 2004.
